UP5-6 armchair, designed by Gaetano Pesce in 1969, became one of the most iconic furniture of the 1970s and 80s. 💫

Also known as The Serius Up 2000, her appearances in various films, commercials and fashion shoots have cemented her status as a design icon. The original material of the  UP5-6 was polyurethane foam, which contributed to its distinctive and innovative design. The use of polyurethane foam allowed for the creation of the unique, organic shape that gives the chair a sculptural and comfortable quality.

The basic idea behind the form of the Serie Up 2000 armchair is to challenge traditional notions of furniture design and create a piece that goes beyond mere functionality.

The seat has a sinuous and organic form that resembles a protective cocoon or womb. The unconventional form of the UP5-6 armchair reflects Pesce's avant-garde and conceptual approach to design.

The womb-like shape is a celebration of femininity and serves to create a comfortable and inviting seating experience. The use of a ball and chain attached to the seat was a conscious design choice by Pesce. It is meant to symbolize and highlight the social restrictions and burdens placed on women at the time it was created, making a strong statement about gender roles and challenges.
